Private or Oversea’s Bariatric Surgery

The below document outlines the National Guidance on Private Bariatric Surgery.

It is important for patients to understand if they chose to have bariatric surgery privately, either abroad or in the UK, they will not be entitled to NHS follow-up care.

Patients who have bariatric surgery need lifelong follow up care to ensure that their nutrition needs are met, as detailed in above document.

Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board have confirmed that if a patient has self funded bariatric surgery, whether in the UK or abroad, the routine follow up arrangements (which are usually for 2 years) must also be self funded (and should have been included in the package).

Routine follow up from privately funded bariatric surgery will not be carried out via the NHS.

NHS care following any private surgery is limited to the management of emergency care only.
