Learning Disabilities – Support for Patients

Support for Patients with Learning Disabilities

We are committed to making our practice as inclusive, understanding and accessible as possible for people with learning disabilities and their families.

Our Purple Star Accreditation

We are proud to be part of Hertfordshire County Council’s Purple Star scheme, which recognises our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities and helping to reduce health inequalities.

If you or someone you care for has a learning disability, please let us know especially if this diagnosis was made privately.  This helps us ensure you/they are included on our Learning Disability Register, which allows us to offer additional support, health checks and tailored communication.

Your Purple Health Folder

Adult patients with a learning disability may receive a Purple Health Folder from the Hertfordshire Health Liaison Team.  This folder is a personal health record designed to help you:

  • Keep important health information together
  • Communicate your health needs and preferences clearly
  • Help doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other professionals understand how best to support you

If you don’t yet have a Purple Folder, please speak to our reception team or contact the Hertfordshire Health Liaison Team for advice.

Hertfordshire Community Learning Disability Nursing Service have produced a number of Youtube Videos .

Hidden Disabilities and Accessibility Support

We understand that visiting the surgery can sometimes be overwhelming.  We have a Hidden Disabilities Policy and are always happy to make adjustments to help you feel comfortable.

If you need extra help, for example:

  • A quieter space or separate waiting area
  • Reduced lighting or noise
  • More time during your appointment
  • Assistance with communication or understanding information

Please let any member of our team know.  You can do this in person, by phone or contact us online.  We’ll always do our best to support you.

Working Together for Inclusivity

Our upcoming refurbishment will improve our accessibility for patients and staff however we are continually looking for ways to make our practice more inclusive.  If you have feedback or ideas on how we can improve, we would love to hear from you.
