Changes to local NHS policy on prescribing gluten-free food Posted on 29 Dec 2017

East and North Hertfordshire CCG, the local NHS organisation which plans and pays for healthcare in this area conducted a 10 week public consultation during the summer to gain the views of local people and clinicians on a number of healthcare provisions.

One of these was to stop the prescribing of gluten-free foods. 77% of the public who took part in the consultation agreed with this proposal. 67% of people who considered themselves to be directly affected by this policy supported this proposal.

This means that from 15th January 2018, gluten-free foods will no longer be prescribed on the NHS for the majority of patients in Hertfordshire, the exceptions will be those with a learning disability who could have difficulty choosing alternative suitable foods.

Coeliac UK has a lot of information on gluten-free foods. Visit their website (link below) or call 0333 332 2033.
